Jörn Lachmund was born in 1960 in Bremerhaven in the northern part of Germany.

After 2 years of navy service, he studied physics at Hamburg University (diploma in 1986) and in 2005 he received his PhD in medical physics from Bremen University. 

Since 1986, he is working for ATLAS ELEKTRONIK GmbH in the fields of development, training, logistics, as well as project and product management of ATLAS systems. Since 2013, he is in charge of the product management in the submarine systems department of the company.
